The above is one of the famous paintings by modernist artist Edward Burra, which caught my eye in London’s Tate Modern. Burra was drawn to scenes of city life and unashamed of bad taste.
The Snack Bar (1930), depicts a heavily made Soho French prostitute, wolfing down a sandwich in the Continental Snack Bar in Shaftesbury Avenue. “handy for ladies on the game to have a sit down and a cup of tea in their rest periods.”
Dont ya just love the European traffic signs. Beware of prostitutes, is my latest offering, and the Italian traffic sign is causing no end of confusion for Italian drivers.
One local wasn’t sure whether it was a warning to be careful of crossing prostitutes or informing him that they were operating in that area.
” . . . saw this sign and had to slow down to get a proper look. I couldn’t believe it – the woman has a mini-skirt and high heels on and very big breasts. I just couldn’t work out what it was for?”
Well, if anything, it will generate a lot of business for the Ladies of the Night.
